These exceptional images date from the launch of Country Life magazine in 1897 through to the present day. The collection is based around the historic and modern day images of houses and gardens, specially commissioned for the magazine. The collection also features historic buildings and churches; ever-changing landscapes photographed in all seasons; a wide range of quintessential country pursuits and social events; agriculture and animals.
About the Picture Library
Country Life Picture Library’s beginnings are intertwined with those of the magazine, founded in 1897 by Edward Hudson, friend of Gertrude Jekyll and patron of Edwin Lutyens. Since its inception, every issue of the magazine has featured an article on a country house. This series has grown over more than 100 years and the library forms a remarkable record of some of the most important and beautiful houses, interiors and gardens in Britain and abroad.

Cumulative Index and Magazine Articles
Country Life publishes a yearly Cumulative Index listing articles on houses and gardens and half yearly indices listing articles and authors, which are available to buy from the library. We can search these indices to find articles in our library of bound volumes dating back to 1897. Copies of articles, features and advertisements are available to purchase.
