How to Search

Search the site using keywords
Enter your keywords into the search box at the top of each page and search our entire online collection.

Refine your search by selecting categories from the drop-down menu next to the search box.

Search Tips
Use OR between words to find images that contain at least one of several keywords.

Use NOT to exclude certain search terms.

Use AND to combine search terms.

To search for parts of a word, use an asterisk (*) to indicate the remainder of the word, e.g. country* to match countryside and also other words starting with country

Once a search has been completed, apply one or more of the search filters to refine your search results.

Browse our galleries
Click the browse collection drop-down menu and select the headings of the types of images you wish to view. This will bring up all the images in the collection under those headings.

Can't find the image you're looking for?
We are adding images to the site every day, but still have a vast amount of unscanned material in our archives which we will be more than happy to search through for you. To request a search, please contact the Picture Library.

How to Order

Register
Please register in order to set-up an account. By registering you will be able to:

  • Set up lightboxes and save images for future orders
  • Order hi-res image files from your searches and lightboxes.

You can order a single image from a search results page by selecting basket icon under the image. Alternatively, you can select images to add to a lightbox.

Lightboxes
A lightbox allows you to save the images you are interested in. Your lightbox will be saved even when you logout, and you can return to it at any time. You can set-up and use as many lightboxes as you need for as many different projects.

Select which of your lightboxes you wish to add an image to from the drop-down menu. To set-up and start using a new lightbox, click plus sign. To add an image to a lightbox select lightbulb icon under the image.

Images can be removed from a lightbox by selecting Delete icon.

Ordering Images
An image can be ordered from a search by clicking basket icon underneath the image. All images from your lightbox can be placed in the basket by clicking basket icon underneath the lightbox.

Once the images have been added to the basket, you will be able to review your request, remove any images not required, and add details about your project and how the images are to be used. You will then be able to proceed and send your request.

Confirmation of your request will then be sent to you by email. A member of the Picture Library staff will then contact you with a quote. If you then wish to proceed and order, simply contact us to confirm your order.

Ordering Prints
If you wish to order a print of an image that appears on this site, please fill out the enquiry form on the prints to buy page.
